ALEX SMITH

Texas Music Awards Male Vocalist nominee Alex Smith (photo- far left) brings songwriting and lead vocals to The Bigsbys. He is nominated for his vocals on their current CD, True Story.

Like other members of the band, Alex brings his own flavor to the aromatic stew that draws a wide variety of listeners from all over the country. If you like that laid back kind of feel to your buzz evening, I encourage you to check out Alex Smith and The Bigsbys.

Good Luck & Country Blessings.

CAMERAN NELSON

Today's Male Vocalist nominee for the Texas Music Awards is Cameran Nelson. From the time he played bass guitar at the age of thirteen in his dad's band, Cameran has known what he wanted to do with his life. And he's doing it very well!

His first EP, Reckless In Texas, features five great songs. To me, his vocal quality is a mix of red-dirt and Collin Raye. I guarantee this is not the last time we'll see Cameran Nelson on the TMA list.

Good Luck & Country Blessings!

MARK ALLAN ATWOOD

Our Spotlight artist and Male Vocalist nominee for his vocals on Burned At the Crossroads today is Mark Allan Atwood. Mark comes to the Texas Music Awards category with a solid understanding of what it means to be a great songwriter and performer. With his dad's love of traditional country, his mom's vocal abilities from the 50's/ 60's and picking up his own choices in music genre's along the way, Mark is like a giant snowball rolling down the mountain. Like most musicians, everything he has come in contact with along his life's journey has influenced the sound he delivers in the now.

His current album, Burned At the Crossroads, showcases a classic Arlo Guthrie style voice beautifully in songs such as Strong Enough and She's Good.

This is not Mark's first time on the TMAs. He was awarded the Rising Star in 2010 and the My Texan Award in 2012.

Good Luck & Country Blessings!

MIKE AMABILE

This week we get to know the Male Vocalist nominees for the Texas Music Awards.

To kick off the list, I'd like you to meet Mike Amabile. Mike is nominated for his vocal performances on the Open Your Eyes album as part of the group Run Over Twice.

As I listened to the clips available for their current album at MyTexasMusic, I heard influences of a variety of musicians and groups from the late 60's to mid- 70s.

A look at Mike Amabile's webpage will introduce you to an awesome artist with a wide range of vocal talent you do not want to miss.

Good Luck and Country Blessings

NORMA ZENTENO BENEFIT

Great entertainment for a Great cause.  Step up and share the love this weekend!

Country Blessings for a speedy recovery, Norma!

SUE YOUNG

They say 'music soothes the savage beast'. I know that quote came long before Sue Young but they must have had a premonition of this woman with her crystalline vocal style. Whether she is singing in English or Spanish, her spiritualistic center shines.

As I listened to clips from each of her albums, I became mesmerized by the emotional quality of Sue's voice. The Albuquerque Journal calls her "one of the most versatile, heartfelt singer/ songwriters around."

Just one of the many reasons she is among the nominees for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Good Luck and Country Blessings!

T.C. SMYTHE

If you listen to music out of Texas at all, the name T. C. Smythe should sound familiar. T.C. is part of the duo Smythe and Taylor.  While they are an awesome duo, T.C. is a talent on her own with a voice to be experienced.

Her strong Americana vocals on songs like Hummingbird, Cold Missouri Waters and Coyote Wind (from their These Rosita Hills LP) are great examples of why she is one of the nominees for Female Vocalist of the Year.

This is not the first time T.C. has been in this category. She was also nominated in 2006.

Good Luck and Country Blessings!

MYRNA SANDERS

Myrna Sanders is one of those ladies you just can't help but like.  Her music is soulful, blues, introspective and fun. Her current album, Big Head Diva, showcases Myrna at her best. With eleven tracks on an album that has been several years in the making, Myrna has given herself plenty of room to explore her  abilities as a singer, songwriter and musician.

If you have not heard Myrna perform, check out her MUSIC link for a sampling of why this lady is one of the nominees for Female Vocalist of the Year!

JESSIE SAMFORD

Jessie Samford is the only female in the five-member group comprising Parker Heights. Though Parker Heights has only been a group since 2006, the siblings spent a lot of years prior honing their skills and finding where they fit best within the group. When you hear Jessie's voice on tracks like Running Scared or Not yet (from their self-titled EP), you'll understand why she is one of the nominees for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Aside from a beautiful vocal range allowing her to translate any song into her own, she is also an accomplished mandolin player.

Good Luck, Jessie and Country Blessings!

ASHLEE ROSE

I'm starting the line-up off this week with Female Vocalist nominee Ashlee Rose.

Ashlee Rose is a South Texas native. It's been my experience, that only good things come out of South Texas and this young lady is no exception.
She is a talented guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. With many nominations and awards to her credentials, you could say she cut her teeth on the music business.

When you click on her name, you'll be taken to her webpage where Ashlee greets you with a tune from her current album, Songs In A Suitcase. My Boots  is a kicky little song that shows her fun side. While other songs on the album such as Crazy Over You and I Can't Make You Love Me show a softer, romantic side.

No breathy lyrics from this lady. Her voice control for such a young age is amazing.

This isn't Ashlee's first trip to the TMAs. She is a former Rising Star Award winner (2004 - at age 15) as well as having been nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year (2007).

Good Luck, Ashlee Rose and Country Blessings!

TEXAS MUSIC AWARDS SPOTLIGHTS BEGIN!

I know I should have started on these weeks ago. I mean, it's not like I did not know who the nominees were. I even voted! Have just been dragging my feet into 2013. But I'm picking up the pace. All this week I'll be introducing you to the Female Vocalist of the Year Nominees.  So kick back while I tell you a bit about this talented group of women. Click on the links to hear clips from their work and maybe buy an album or five.

MINDY MCCREADY - Finally at Peace

It is always sad when we see such great talent leave us too soon. Today, the music headlines are all about the apparent suicide of Mindy McCready. Her death is the beginning of the final chapter of her life. A life riddled with rise and fall of success, health issues, problems with alcohol and prescription drugs. I think the final straw was the death of her boyfriend, David Wilson, in January of this year.

If you're not familiar with her music, she recorded hits such as Ten Thousand Angels and Guys Do It All The Time.

Success is not everything. Too often people get into the business thinking it is what will make them happy. A few find happiness and can handle the trials and tribulations that come with the process. But we've also heard too many stories of those who could not handle the pressures of this business.

My heart, prayers and Country Blessings go out to Mindy McCready's family and friends. While Mindy and David are together again, two young boys are left without a mom. So very sad.

May you finally have found peace, Mindy. Country Blessings

Here's a link to a YouTube video... supposedly the last song David produced before his own suicide.
