A WEEK OF TRIBUTES

CELEBRATING OUR NATION'S INDEPENDENCE!

Over the next seven days I'll be showcasing videos from YouTube from some of my favorite artists. Two of the videos you will see are brand new - one created especially for this week.
I am so blessed to have friends in the music community I can reach out to
- and who reach back to take my hand.

I thought about showing you the line-up but decided, like fireworks, they are more special when you don't know what's coming next.

Happy 4th of July!

Beginning this week I will no longer provide ticket links. The point of this is to draw traffic to the sites of artists and venues. You will find all of the ticket info in either of those two places.

Not all events take place in Texas. With that in mind I will begin listing them not only by day but by TEXAS and ON THE ROAD. With that in mind…

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Raven Hotel by Matt Harlan

RAVEN HOTEL
By Matt Harlan

RAVEN HOTEL is a journey through time and space, leaving the cares of your day behind. The opening strains of Old Spanish Moss invite the listener to settle in, pour a drink and put your feet up. While the genre is listed as Alternative, I am carried back to the 1960’s and city park in Boulder CO where as a little girl I would sit and listen to the folk artists tell stories through their music.

The smooth tone of Rachel Jones’ voice compliments Matt Harlan’s rich depth for a perfect pairing. A number of talented musicians lend to the overall flavor the tracks evoke. From Old Spanish Moss to the last note of Rearview Display, each of the twelve tracks on RAVEN HOTEL offers up a solid tumbler of southern comfort.

Check in to the Raven Hotel and let this twelve shots of magic soothe your soul.

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Mighty Rider by Jeff Posey

MIGHTY RIDER
By Jeff Posey

There’s something magical in this CD by Jeff Posey. I suggest you listen to Track 10 before going any further. The tune, Mighty Rider, has a background like very few I’ve heard. Stemming from an unlikely friendship many years ago, to the search for a dear friend only to come upon the 1939 recording of an amazing song brimming with rich history. Check out the home page for Jeff Posey for the complete story behind this incredible tune.

The rest of the album is a cowboy storyteller’s dream. While you don’t have to be a true cowboy to appreciate the words, they will carry you away to a simpler time with the gentle gait of a horse, the enchantment of a campfire and a strong cup of coffee. A respite from the daily hustle, bustle, chaos we seem to drown in on a daily basis.

When I review an album, I attempt to take them track by track, though that is not the order my Media Player suggests. Each song is a strong current of originality, flowing seamlessly from one to the other. From the first strum of his guitar on Miles of Mustangs to the last chord of Turn Out the Horses and every note in between you have a solid sense of who Jeff Posey is, both as a man and a songwriter.

I have a definitive set of cassettes that never leave my truck. The motor of my CD player has breathed its last but the cassette player still provides me with some of the best traveling music—mostly Texas artists. I wish I could find someone with quality equipment to transfer this cd to tape. Because I guarantee MIGHTY RIDER would become a traveling staple. But regardless of the format, if you are a fan of Cowboy/ Americana/ Texas music, this CD is a must for your listening pleasure.

You can purchase your copy from Jeff’s page at My Texas Music

And watch for Jeff playing a gig near you. Nothing beats hearing this man perform live.

I’m giving MIGHTY RIDER

Please visit Jeff at either of these two stomping grounds:

OUT OF THE CHUTE - with Jeff Posey

One of the many highlights of my trip to Texas last month was the opportunity to sit down with the legendary Jeff Posey. I’ve known about Jeff via reputation only for several years. Aside from meeting up with our mutual friend, W.C. Jameson, the chance to meet the real deal in person is what prompted me to begin my trip early.

I met up with W.C. and Jeff at Fuel Coffee House in Llano my first night in Texas.
This quaint little coffee bar just off the town square offers an eclectic variety of music throughout the week.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Jeff was nothing like what I’d heard. Where I expected a loud, maybe a bit ‘wild’ (in a good way) instead I found a soft-spoken gentleman. Jeff Posey has a depth to him that resonates through his music. And an infectious smile that will warm your heart on the bleakest of days.

Jeff is passionate about his music and told me the hardest part of songwriting is the word – making each one ‘new’. He wants to write words that paint pictures, evoke a tangible sense of the stories he has to tell. Being a three-time finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival is testament to his ability to accomplish what he sets out to do.

He first began this journey in 2005 with his album, Pocketful. The album was nominated for Album of the Year from the Texas Music Awards right out of the chute. When I asked Jeff what he is most proud of. Aside from his two children, he is proud of his music and the ability to do what he loves in spite of some and with the wonderful support of others.

For more on this talented storyteller I invite you to visit his website where you’ll find out more about Jeff as well as sound bites and lyrics from some of his songs.
