TURNTABLE TUESDAY- I'm Not the Devil

I love surprises. The good kind, of course. Not those Haunted House kind of things, but surprises that make me smile. I'M NOT THE DEVIL is one of those good ones. Cody Jinks is the perfect example of you "can't judge a book (or in this case, an artist) by its cover". Cody has all the appearance of 'outlaw country' to the core. Yet, when you hear his voice, the two just do not match. But, he parallels the two images in one of the tracks on the album - The Same. The title track, I'm Not the Devil comes in a close second. His rough exterior appears as an armor, protecting the vulnerability of his soul... vulnerability necessary to produce thought-provoking lyrics.

Some of his musical background comes through in his beautifully done tribute cover of Merle Haggard's The Way I Am. Every note, every tune peels back another layer of  Cody Jinks - the man. Through the process we discover the importance of who each of us are and the minuscule part we play in this life. There are No Guarantees, you just have to Give All You Can, particularly when you have a Heavy Load to bear. One song I found the most heartwarming was Gaylor Creek Church where everyone knows each other and the preacher works the mill right alongside his parishioners. I found Vampires to be a very eloquent way of making a point.

While there's an outlaw edge present on this album, what you will hear is pure country to the core. With the opening strains of the first tune, you can feel the sawdust beneath your boots and your partner's hand in yours as you move around the dance floor. Find your soul in I'M NOT THE DEVIL.

Here's a sample from Cody's YouTube Channel:

I've listened to this album over and over again, enjoying every textured note and outlaw lyric. For that, I'm tipping my hat:

THANK YOU TO OUR VETERANS!

Today is about thanking those who have in the past, who currently serve and those who will provide us with the life we enjoy in the coming years.

First... a little history about Veteran's Day from The History Channel:

The people who deserve our thanks the most, in my opinion, are the families who wait at home. Grab the tissues. This year I'm featuring a classic from the band, Lonestar. This is the official video.

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - The Warhorses

We're getting back in the swing of things here in Kelly's Country and what a way to start. This week I have a relatively new group to introduce you to. They've been around since 2014 but people are finally beginning to take serious notice of these five guys. They call themselves 'The Warhorses.

Their self-titled album fits the group name well. Nearly every track connects with a group member in some way ... making this the perfect album for everyone who listens to say 'I hear you, man. I've been there.'

A quick introduction before I give you my take on this album.
Casey Shaw - vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, songwriter
Sonny Bihl - guitar
Seth "Tobo" Tobin - bass, songwriter
Phil Medina - drums
Lucas Seiferman - lead guitar, harmony vocals

Casey and Seth's songwriting talents (as well as Lang Freeman and Clay Shaw) shine on every track while the music from all of them bring the pieces together in a fantastic album. You'll hear influences of southern rock, jazz, and blues. As I listened to each of the ten songs I heard notes of Marshall Tucker Band, Townes VanZandt and Arlo Guthrie.

One of my favorite tunes is Hear You Sing Along. The guitar lead is exceptional and sets the tone for the emotion Casey needed to convey to his wife, his inspiration for the lyrics. I Drink Whisky is one of the best true country songs I've heard in a long time. Check out this video and see if you agree:

There were a couple of spots that came off a bit flat but I think the challenge was more about trying to carry the lower notes but did not deter from the over-all song. Casey's pure southern roots carry over, giving this album the authenticity The Warhorses strive for.

The raw vocals are a far cry from what some people are trying to sell as country. These guys touch a chord with folks from the Red Dirt road to city folks craving to break out of their cubicles and have a good time. Casey sums their sound up best - 'What you see and hear is what you get... We just want to be known for playing good  music, being good musicians and good dudes.'

The Warhorses have traveled far on the musicians journey and this album is only a whisper of the stories they have to tell.  I'm tipping my hat:

.8

OUT OF THE CHUTE - A New Venture

An AMAZING thing happened at the Ozark Creative Writers conference last month.  Okay, several amazing things but this one is HUGE and involves all of you.

KellysCountry is now expanding into publication. I'll give you the details in a minute but first, this is the most recent copy of Saddlebag Dispatches magazine, with western author Jodi Thomas on the cover.

Saddlebag Dispatches is a glossy, full-color magazine published four times a year. The subjects vary but all with a core cowboy/ western theme. Where Stories Of The West Come To Be Told  That might have something to do with our Editor-in-Chief being the talented author, Dusty Richards

Not all of KellysCountry will run in Saddlebag Dispatches. Rather, I will focus on one artist to write about each month. I'm kicking off my debut with an article on Rex Allen. Rex, otherwise known as The Arizona Cowboy, was a film star in the 1950s, along with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Prior to that, he was part of The National Barn Dance radio program from WLS, Chicago.

I won't give away everything. You can read the magazine on-line for Free or subscribe to the gorgeous magazine to have and to hold for $14.95 an issue. You'll understand what I mean when I say bargain. You won't find a magazine of this caliber on any newsstand at this price point.

Watch my Twitter and FB accounts for notice when the Winter 2016 issue goes live. In the mean time, here's a video of Rex Allen:

Turntable Tuesday returns tomorrow. The Warhorses are kicking things off! Until then...
