TEXAS MUSIC AWARDS - Cover of the Year

First off, yesterday's tribute to the nominees for Producer of the Year kind of got buried beneath The Party List so if you missed that article, you can see it HERE

Today we are talking COVERS. Not the album cover but the art of taking someone else's song and making it your own. A true artist's voice will come through on any song they sing but when they can take a previous recording/ hit and perform with the capability of making you forget the original ever existed, then you have an amazing cover tune.

Here are the nominees for this year's Cover of the Year:

"All Along the Watchtower" - Marina Rocks (original by Jimi Hendrix)
From her The Commerce Kid Album

"Angel From Montgomery" - The Grievous Angels (original by Bonnie Raitt)
From The Grievous Angels Album

"Funny How Time Slips Away" - Scott Taylor Band (original by Willie Nelson)
From their Beautiful Sin Album

"Georgia On My Mind" - Bill Reid (original by Ray Charles)
From his Blues for Lost Dreams Album

"Wishing" - Emily Grace Berry (original by Buddy Holly)
From her Canyon Music Album

TEXAS MUSIC AWARDS - Producer of the Year

Next on our list of categories for the Texas Music Awards is Producer of the Year. Producer's have a tough job. They have to be able to see the same vision the artist sees for the project. If you have ever tried to get in someone's head for any reason you know how tough that can be. But aside from seeing the vision, they have to make the dream a reality - to give birth to a conceptual idea. To make things more difficult, sometimes the artist is not sure what they want - except to play good music. These are good reasons why sometimes, you'll find the artist acting as their own producer. Did you know that Buddy Holly was one of the first to produce his own vision professionally?

Here are the nominees for Producer of the Year and the album they breathed life into:

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Only Me by Rhonda Vincent

ONLY ME is the newest release from Rhonda Vincent. This new album showcases Rhonda’s roots in that there is no line between country music and bluegrass music, only tradition. Listening to the twelve tracks from this two-disc compilation reminds us why our music roots are to be treasured and passed down. They give us an insight into Rhonda Vincent’s musical background in rural Missouri, as a person and an artist.

Rhonda Vincent always brings the best she has to offer, whether in a recording or a live performance and this CD is no exception. The Bluegrass cuts include a duet with Willie Nelson (Only Me) and Daryle Singletary (We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds), two exemplary artists in their own right. Nestled among those two are gems of recreation. Rhonda Vincent has taken traditional country songs like We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds (George Jones & Melba Montgomery) and I Need Somebody Tonight (Jack Greene) and worked them into beautiful Bluegrass remixes.

Five of the six country tracks are covers of some of the best traditional tunes country has to offer while bearing the Rhonda Vincent signature sound we have come to love. Rhonda Vincent musically created her own cross-genre within this CD, proving an artist can stay true to their roots and put out a great product.

From the title track on Disc One – Bluegrass to the final note of Drivin’ Nails on Disc Two- Country, I can understand how this CD debuted at #1 on Billboard after only two days of sales. Her crystal vocals mixed with traditional instruments are a match made in heaven.

I know I seem to be tipping 5 hats lately on reviews, but the music coming across my desk is exemplary and deserves every one of them. ONLY ME is hits the top of the mark.

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Oak Ridge Boys - Boys Night Out!

BOYS NIGHT OUT!
The Oak Ridge Boys Live

Released on Cleopatra Records in three formats - CD, colored vinyl and digital download - Boys Night Out brings us fourteen tracks of the Oak Ridge Boys’ biggest hits. This is their first true live album and is the perfect edition to a long list of chart-topping albums over the course of their career.

Seeing the Oak Ridge Boys in concert is an uplifting experience we carry in our hearts long after the stage door is locked and the bus rolls to the next show. They leave us wanting more, not because the performance was lacking but because we never want the experience to end. Thanks to this new album, all the excitement of seeing them perform live will be with us always.

For over forty years, the Oak Ridge Boys have shared their talent and joy of performing with their fans. From coast to coast, worldwide and from their theater in Branson Missouri the perfectly attuned harmonies of Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and William Lee Golden continue to entertain us.

Whether you have seen the Oak Ridge Boys in concert or still have that special experience on your bucket list, you will love this album. Boys Night Out releases April 15, 2014.

I give this album:
