TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Here in the Garden

HERE IN THE GARDEN By Richard Dobson is a perfect example of why I love Texas.
From the first strains of the title track til the last note of Gone to Texas, Richard weaves a comforting web of pure tones that only add to the stories he has to tell. Whether they be about lovers (The Moon is for Lovers), annoying birds (Black Crow) or shopping for suspenders ( Tractor Supply), each tune draws you in.  One to Run the River With is reminiscent of a Mike Blakely song I love. Again… a story told from a different perspective but the core is still the same… trust and friendship – knowing who you can count on.

Marketing is a big part of how well an album does. I’ve seen everything over the years. Everything except liner notes about the song. The inside cover of this tri-fold package tells you a quick sentence blurb about what was going through Richard’s mind when he wrote each song. I love this concept not because he explains the song but because even if I’d not met Richard in person, talked with him, this little extra something gave me an insight to the man behind the music.

This CD is long on talent from a man who lives life… soaking up every step he takes. And we are blessed he shares the journey with the rest of us.

I give this CD

OUT OF THE CHUTE - Richard Dobson

Few musicians have led the life similar to Richard J. Dobson. He is one of the most revered songwriters throughout the world. His words are poetic, descriptive and soulful. He is a master storyteller. Nanci Griffith is right on target when she refers to Richard as "the Hemingway of Country Music."

Born in Tyler, Texas, Richard honed his skills with folks like Townes Van Zant, Guy Clark and Steve Earle. His songs have been recorded by Lacy J. Dalton (Old Friends), Nanci Griffith (Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith).  Most recently his song Baby Ride Easy appeared on the lost tracks of Johnny Cash - Out Among the Stars. The song (a duet number) has previously been recorded by Carlene Carter/ Dave Edmunds and (the late) Billie Jo Spears/ Del Reeves

His most recent CD, Gulf Coast Tales, is a collection of songs based on his time in the Gulf Coast of Texas and MS.

Though Richard calls Switzerland home (since 1999), he still makes frequent trips stateside to visit friends, play music and write... always observing and writing.

You can find out more about Richard and his music by visiting any of the sites listed below.

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Pearly Gates Saloon

PEARLY GATES SALOON delivers twelve heartfelt tunes about life in general.
Don’t let the cover or title mislead you. This is not a cowboy church album. Whether you’re a dog lover, have seen a deer party in progress (slightly embellished true story!) or have lost someone close to you, there is something on this album for everyone. Basically, if you have lived through anything, this album is a walk down memory lane.

As a consummate songwriter and artist, Woody Eastman delivers each track with the quiet ease he embodies. With the help of other Texas greats such as Mike Blakely (and his talented wife, Annie Blakely), Larry Nye (recorded at his La-Z-L Studio), john Arthur martinez (on drums? Seriously cool!), Kurt Baumer on fiddle (wonder if he used his fluorescent one) and Larry Boyd (just to name a few), each track is Americana at it’s best.

The only thing better than owning this album is to hear Woody perform them live. And if you’re in the West Texas area, the possibilities for those occasions are plentiful.

I give PEARLY GATES SALOON

OUT OF THE CHUTE - Woody Eastman

Opportunities abounded and little surprises materialized in places I never even considered during my 12-day trip to Texas. Today’s guest was one of those special treats. I’m talking about Woody Eastman.

Although Woody has been musical most of his life (he played tenor saxophone in the Pearland High School band), he did not open up the writing side until around 1981. On one hand I think, why did he wait so long while the ‘writer’ part of me says he was just racking up experience – some happy and some bittersweet. But they all make for great tunes.

The first thing that caught my attention is how such a big Texas guy can be so quiet with the most incredibly gentle voice? After having spent an evening with Woody and friends at The Badu House in Llano, then meeting him for lunch the next day I was captured  by his overall unassuming nature. I got the impression Woody doesn’t think he’s anything special, or great. He just loves what he does. He counts the late Dan Folgerberg, Shake Russell, Walt Wilkins and Mike Blakely among his mentors and idols. Of the group, the last two inspire him with their ability to paint a picture with words… to make you see what they are singing – not just hear the music. I hear a lot of Folgerberg in his style

Although I wasn’t able to hear him perform live this trip, you can bet I’m putting the option on my ‘To Do’ list for the next time I’m in Llano. Anyone care to join me?

You can find out more about Woody and his music by clicking on his name in the first paragraph.
Country Blessings!

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Bridges

When a young artist garners the attention, admiration and support of artists such as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and (the late) Ray Price you know there’s something special going on.

On her debut album, BRIDGES, Texas artist MarySarah shares her passion for music while paying homage to the ones who brought her to the dance. While some artists choose to record covers or do tribute albums, MarySarah teamed up with some of her idols and staunch supporters such as The Oak Ridge Boys to let them in on the fun.

MarySarah’s young, fresh voice, showcases experience beyond her years. BRIDGES is the result of a project blending classic with old soul. While she takes the lead on many tracks, she is just as content letting her heroes shine.

Each of the ten focus tracks and the subsequent three bonus tracks reassure us solid Country Music is not dead. While I could tell you about the individual tracks, I’d rather you just picked up a copy and experienced the magic that is MarySarah music for yourself.

I've giving this album

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - The Rose by Juanita Rose

THE ROSE -
With a classic voice like those of the artists she spent her musical career with, Juanita Rose opens up the CD by introducing us to the King of Country Music – Roy Acuff. Who else remembers he seldom was without a yo-yo in his pocket?

From She Dropped the Whole World In My Hands (which she co-wrote with the late Jimmy Widener) to Six Weeks Every Summer, Juanita takes us back in time when music had an unmistakable sound. She has chosen songs by notable songwriters such as Kim Carnes and Ray Griff. Juanita knows a good song when she hears one as well as the feelings she wants to evoke in her listeners.

Any of these tracks would have shot to the top of the charts back when the legends of country music reigned supreme. The fact that people still want this genre is evident in the climb of The King of Country Music and its current position on the IndieWorld charts.

If more people get behind artists like Juanita Rose, we will see the pendulum of quality music swing once again.

OUT OF THE CHUTE- Juanita Rose

I am a staunch supporter of Traditional Country music. I grew up on tunes that told stories of something other than partying and acting stupid (though I guess cheating songs could fall into the latter category)

So when I came across this lovely and talented lady, I knew I wanted to know more about her - and to share her with you. Today, we are talking with Juanita Rose.

A bit about Juanita Rose:
Juanita’s Bio

Juanita Rose’s music has taken her from a small rural farming community near Kinston, North Carolina to the Grand Ole’ Opry stage as well as on international tours throughout Canada.

She has lived a musical life most performers can only dream of. As a young teenager she was discovered by the legendary Hank Snow and personally invited to star as his opening act for the Country Hall of Famer’s stage show.

Juanita has also appeared in radio and tv commercials throughout the Midwest.

1 – You have quite an interesting background in country music. Did you have a down time between then and now? And what have you been doing in between?
Yes I did Kelly...In the down time, I was a radio personality for The State Senate, the state of Tn....

2 – What would you say is the most important thing you learned in those early days and is that associated with anyone in particular?
Well one of the most important things I learned early on, is how important your fans are, and how to relate to them, also how to work with band members...I was fortunate enough to be the opening act with Grand Ole Opry Legend Hank Snow. for several years...He taught me a lot about the business...

3 – Your heart appears to be solid in traditional country music. I appreciate you are recording YOUR music. What attracts you to this genre?
Yes Kelly, my heart is in Traditional Country Music...I was raised on this kind of music and what attracted me was...It is a kind of music that people can relate to of things that might have happened in their lives or in the lives of others...Could be lost love affairs, heartaches, happy times, etc, all of the things that I am not hearing in todays music that they call country...

4 – You have a classic voice, unique in today’s music trends. Do you think we’ll see a return to real country music that you and I grew up with? And what do you think we need to do to get there?
Thank you Kelly, I certainly hope we see a real return of the kind of music we grew up with...People tell me all the time how mush they miss the good country music that we use to share....But I think we just have to all join together that love Traditional Country Music and push radio stations to play this kind of music, that so many people are wanting to hear...No one person can do it alone...We must keep pushing...I know I will..

5 – How did you come to work with James Williams?
Kelly, I can't begin to say enough nice things about James Williams...I was looking for someone to promote my latest single release, and a friend of mine in the business suggested James...He is a great promoter and is wonderful to work with...

6 – Your new album, The Rose, is a beautiful collection. And I see you co-wrote one of the tunes. Do you enjoy writing? And is there a process you follow when writing?
Thank you, I did co-write one of the songs and I do enjoy writing when I can find the time...No, there is no process for me, only feelings...

7 -  What’s next for Juanita Rose?
Continue to record good Traditional Country Songs and do some touring

8 – Anything I’ve not covered you would like your fans to know?
I would like to say a special thanks to all my fans who have been so wonderful to me over the years and I will continue to record the kind of music you have asked for...Lets keep Traditional Country Music Alive...

A WEEK OF TRIBUTES - 4th of July

GOD BLESS THE USA

First released as a single in 1984, God Bless the USA has become an iconic song for all patriotic events. And as many times as we've heard the song, the meaning is still as strong as ever. I could not think of a better song to wrap up A Week of Tributes than with his song.

Thank you all for following along this week. I hope you had a safe holiday weekend.
Country Blessings!

A WEEK OF TRIBUTES - 4th of July

SOLDIER'S HIDEAWAY
By James Younger

I've known James for over twenty-five years. I've always known of his incredible songwriting abilities. I still sing along to many of the songs he has written.

While on a recent visit with James at his home, he played the MP3 for this tune and I knew I wanted to include the video here. As we celebrate our Independence, let's also remember many of the men and women fighting for our freedom may come back home... but many times not the same person they were prior to deployment.

Please check out Wounded Warrior Project.

A WEEK OF TRIBUTES - 4th of July

POST 2 GATE

The first time I heard this song, Chuck performed live during a Songwriters Showcase at Poodie's Roadhouse in Spicewood TX.  This piece is a true testament to what songwriting is all about - words woven together poetically; full of heart, soul, pain and loss.

While you might not think this fits in with the 4th of July theme, Post 2 Gate is from a real life experience. This is the story of a little boy trying to provide for his family and survive in a horrible situation he didn't ask for. And the soulful lyrics came from deep inside Chuck after experiencing the tragedy first hand... as a soldier in Afghanistan.

This is a tribute song to top them all. Our men and women are in harm's way every day they are there. I thank God he brought Chuck Hawthorne home safe.

I had not met Chuck until that night and now count him among my many blessings in this crazy business.
Post 2 Gate will be featured on Chuck's upcoming album.
