TURNTABLE TUESDAY - SPECIAL EDITION - Real Country - Gene Watson

When the latest album by Gene Watson drops today (Friday, February 26, 2016), you will clearly see why he has been recording and touring for over fifty years. The rich, sultry tone to his voice still entrances his female audiences while being the true gentleman with whom guys can identify.

Reminiscent of the classic country many of us still remember, REAL COUNTRY MUSIC (produced by Dirk Johnson) delivers a magical thirteen tracks to keep you on a dance floor with that special someone or snuggling in front of a fire with a good bottle of wine.

Enough of You (Kris Kristofferson) starts out with a strings background that leads into the true Texas sound, taking us back to his roots as we waltz into an incredible album.  When A Man Can't Get A Woman Off His Mind (Bill Anderson/ Sharon Vaughn is like the next stepping stone along this path of classic country. And the stones continue into Help Me (Larry Gatlin) and the remaining ten songs including Couldn't Love Have Picked A Better Place to Die? (Bucky Jones/ Curly Putnam),  A Girl I Used to Know (David Ball), Bitter They Are, The Harder They Fall (Larry Gatlin), Ramblin' Rose (Joe Sherman/ Noel Sherman), A Bridge That Just Won't Burn (Jim McBride/ Roger Murrah), Ashes to Ashes (Joe Chambers/ Larry Jenkins/ Mark Sherrill), Old Loves Never Die (Dave Kirby/ Warren Rob), She Never Got Me Over You (Hank Cochran/ Dean Dillon/ Keith Whitley), All My Tomorrows (Nat Stuckey), and I'll Find It Where I Can (Michael Clark/ Zack Van Arsdale). For anyone who knows anything about true country music, you can see from the line-up these songs are from cream of the crop songwriters. Gene Watson and his team have picked the best of the best to represent REAL COUNTRY MUSIC.

Since his first appearance on the music scene in 1975 with Love In A Hot Afternoon, Gene Watson has put over 75 titles on the charts - including 23 Top Tens and six #1s. He has been inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame (2002) and an inaugural inductee of the Houston, Texas Music Hall of Fame (2013). His music has not only topped the charts but been featured in movie soundtracks such as Any Which Way You Can. Country Music Hall of Fame included two of Gene Watson's songs on their '500 Greatest Country Songs' collection (2002)

For those of us who crave the simplistic story of complicated relationships served with a delicious melody, Gene Watson delivers in REAL COUNTRY MUSIC.

I'm tipping my hat:

REVIEW WEDNESDAY - Around the Table - Martina McBride

Co-written with Katherine Cobbs

I will be the first to admit I do NOT need yet another cookbook. Yet when I spotted this in my local library I had to bring the book home. AROUND THE TABLE- Recipes and Inspiration for Gatherings Throughout the Year  is not your average cookbook. Martina McBride offers up so much more than appetizer recipes and the perfect dinner.  There is more to Martina than a beautiful voice. She has been entertaining in more ways than one her whole life.

The script in the dedication alone tells you the contents offer more than dinner for the family. There is an elegance to the contents between the cover. While she offers great tips for hosting the perfect dinner party, she also shares simple decorating tips using things you have around the house.

Did you know there are twelve key things to remember when hosting a party? Martina walks you through from envisioning the concept of what you want the meal to portray, through step by step planning and how to work with what you have in your pantry for those 'unexpected' occasions. She simplifies how to avoid the last minute crunch by showing you how to incorporate a planning timeline.

Are you confused about which wine pairs with what you plan to serve? Martina has you covered with 'Wine and Food Pairing 101'

With the basics out of the way, she shares sample party scenarios, complete with a menu, music playlist, decor and complete recipes for the menu. Her Gingersnap cheesecake had my attention.

Martina gets her ideas from everywhere. Downtime on tour, you will find her perusing magazines to see what's trending or scrolling through Pinterest.

And if you hurry... the publisher has set a special price of $12.99 - down from the $29.99 cover price. I'm off to order my own copy now.

I'm tipping AROUND THE TABLE:

Martine McBride, a Kansas native who made her debut on the charts in 1992, has earned a string of hits across twelve albums, including "Blessed", Independence Day" and "Concrete Angel". To date she has a tie for the most Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year Awards with four wins, has been named Academy of Country Music Top Female Vocalist three times, and has been nomianted for fourteen Grammy Awards. She lives in Nashville, Tennesse, with her husband and three daughters.

Katherine Cobbs left her job at National Geographic for culinary school on the West Coast in order to combine her love of food with her passion for writing. For two decades, she has written and developed recipes for magazines and books, collaborating with the prestigious James Beard Award winners. She resides in Birmingham, Alabama with her husband and three daughters (like Martina)

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - My Turn - Tanya Tucker

In her newest CD release, MY TURN, Tanya Tucker is proving while she may have been quiet for the past several years she was not down for the count. As covered in a recent interview with Dan Rather, Tanya Tucker has had her share of personal issues to deal with. Like the true artist she is, Tanya chose to handle those matters in private. Now she's back with classic material done her way... songs she grew up listening to by artists who inspired her as a young girl from Seminole TX.

As I sat listening to the album one thing struck me over and over. Blessed. Tanya's career has been  blessed numerous times both by the people who've inspired and stood beside her through good and bad and by the success that led her through those times. While not everything came up roses for Tanya, she had the guts and the determination to do what she does best - sing and entertain.  MY TURN, full of songs that portray ups and downs, is Tanya Tucker's bounce back. And she's coming back with a vengeance.

She had me with track one - Wine Me Up. A Faron Young classic that has always been a favorite of mine. I knew Faron and to this day the strains of his songs bring back fond memories. That's what you want the classic songs to do... to take you back to those special moments.

The memories continue with Lovesick Blues (Hank Williams), Love's Gonna Live Here (with Jim Lauderdale), Crazy Arms (Ray Price), After the Fire is Gone (Loretta Lynn), Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone? (Charlie Pride), A Thousand Ways (Lefty Frizzell), Big Big Love (Eddie Miller ?), Walk Through This World With Me (George Jones), Oh, Lonesome Me (Don Gibson), You Don't Know Me (Eddy Arnold), and Ramblin Fever (Merle Haggard).

I felt as if this were a album to honor where she came from, who she still is as an artist. While still packin' her sassiness, Tanya Tucker is as traditional as they come and a strong reminder that as long as you stay true to who you are, everything else is just part of life. Deal with the stuff, shove it in a closet, whatever... then pick yourself up and do what you do best.

For tradition and memories, I'm tipping my hat:

REVIEW WEDNESDAY - Stars of the Rock 'n' Roll Highway - Victoria Micklish Pasmore

Take a trip back in time when music really got a party going with STARS of the ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY by Victoria Micklish Pasmore. Passmore’s research led her along U.S. Highway 67, officially designated Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway 67 by the Arkansas General Assembly in 2009. Stretching from Newport AR north to the Missouri border, the 111- mile route was once dotted with nightclubs, honky-tonks as well as school gyms and cafeterias where the first rock ‘n’ rollers staged their early performances and honed their skills in the 1950s and early ‘60s… the cusp of the Rockabilly era.

The publisher, Plum Street Publishes, took the direct approach, putting a name most young people will recognize as the lead story – Elvis Presley. Geared towards readers in grades 5-8, STARS of the ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY is a great read for those of us who remember names like Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty and Wanda Jackson. (Caution! I did have a link for Wanda Jackson's sight but got several security alerts. I am working with them to fix this and will provide a link when I know it is safe) While there were a lot more people Ms Pasmore could have included in her book, she focused on twenty, bringing the book to a quick read for any attention span. As I read the book, several thoughts went through my mind. First and foremost was how much musical history is right out my back door and I was not even aware. The other became a running list of names of people I knew who would enjoy this book as much as I was.

One thing I felt really set this book apart from others were the 'Did You Know' facts - five factoids - given at the end of each chapter.

STARS of the ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY is the perfect read for anyone. Whether you like music in general, grew up listening to Jerry LeeLewis, Carl Perkins or Charlie Rich, or enjoy history in any form. And if as an adult you want your children to learn about when you were their age, this is the perfect door to opening dialogue. Don’t wait until your gone for them to begin asking questions and receiving no answers. Introduce them to the magic now that was the ‘rock n roll highway’.

I’m tipping my hat:

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Letting Go... Slow - Lorrie Morgan

From the time Lorrie Morgan stepped on the Opry stage at the age of 13 she has been living what most would call 'the Dream'. Her first three albums as well as her Greatest Hits all went Platinum. She has also had three Gold albums. Country fans voted her TNN/Music City News Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998! She continued her frantic recording pace steadily from 2002 - 2010. Her lavish Enchanted Christmas production played well at the Opryland Resort and onto the road in 2014. As if that were not enough to keep her busy, she has been touring with Pam Tillis for their Grits & Glamor tour.

Lorrie sums her 'dream life' up best -

I have been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a grandmother, a breadwinner, and, ultimately  a survivor. it seems, in may ways, I am a living, breathing country song, and I know what I sing."

Lorrie Morgan is as country as they come. Her latest compilation - her first in five years - is no exception. In LETTING GOT... SLOW, she has kept the classic feel of the cover tunes while adding just a pinch of herself. A true tribute album that leaves you believing they all could have easily been Lorrie Morgan originals.

The twelve track album includes a mix of the Lorrie sass and grit we expect with a deeper sense of soul in classics like Strange, (Patsy Cline - written by Fred Burch and Mel Tillis), Ode to Billie Joe (Bobby Gentry),  Is It Raining At Your House (Vern Gosdin, Hank Cochran, Dean Dillon), I've Done Enough Dying Today (Larry Gatlin), and Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan).

Slow (Ashlee Hewitt, Dean Sams, Onja rose), Spilt Milk (Kristina Train , James Hogarth, Francis White), Jesus & Hairspray (Katie Kessler, Donald Poythress), Lonely Whiskey (Paul Sikes, Jenifer Zuffinetti), What I'd Say (Robert Bellarmine Byrne, William Soule Robinson), and How Does It Feel (Mark Oliverius, Loretta Lynn Morgan, Kelly Lang) balance the album out, adding to nuances Lorrie Morgan and her producer, Richard Landis, wanted to bring out in this monumental album.

Lorrie says, "I didn't want this to be just another album. I wanted it to be something that really moved me... It was very important to me for this album to reflect the things that I am feeling today."

In my opinion, she has accomplished what she set out to do in true Lorrie Morgan fashion. The one word that kept coming to my mind as I listened to this album was 'MATURE'. While Lorrie's music has always been a 'grown -up' style, the over-all essence of Letting Go.. Slow is almost a therapeutic response to the pain she carries inside. I feel Lorrie Morgan has finally come to terms with everything life has thrown at her over the years and is truly letting go. Letting Go... Slow is a breath of fresh air.

I am tipping my hat
