TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Do It!

There are times when as a reviewer I have to trust the promoters I network with to send me music in my wheelhouse. And, like last week, I get a CD that makes me question only to be reminded not to judge a CD by its cover or artist. This is one of those surprise albums I love to have come across my desk.

When you hear Jamie Talbert and the Band of Demons  you might picture anything but country. But they are not a hard rock or punk rock group . There is an undercurrent of those sounds in their music because, like a lot of artists, they have elements from all styles of music in their history. A bit of  mandolin bluegrass mixes with a punch of drums, guitar licks that accentuate every word and a pinch of that sound from other genres that make an amazing pot of something you can't get enough of.  DO IT is that album.  Jamie sums everything up nicely. "It's always fun when we hear that we were not what someone expected. We love to take our listeners through a musical journey and we play music that we love."

The 'hmm' factor still swirled through my brain as I read their bio. ... this Jam Band influenced group feels the lyric, "and a band of demons joined in, and it sounded something like this," sums up their style perfectly. The description of the lyrics as well as the band name are a nod to a Charlie Daniels tune, 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' . With those words in mind, I popped the CD into the laptop and hit play. From the first note of Back in My Arms to the visuals in Postcard From the Road, I fell in love with this group.

Jamie Talbert co-wrote seven of the tracks. Back In My Arms, All I Know, Sun In My Skies, and Wildfire were written with the help of fellow band members Todd Conger and Tyler Henderson as well as Cody Oxley. Renowned Texas songwriter, Mike Ethan Messick lent his talent with Jamie on Him and My Baby as well as Whiskey Drinkin' (Stormy Cooper also helped on this tune and the album was recorded at his studio in Houston). Alex Weeden, guitarist for Miranda Lambert, teamed with Jamie for Tired of the Rings. Other contributors to this CD were Jordan Powell (Postcard From the Road) and Waylon Strain (Keep That Girl Away From Me)  Each of these songwriters brought their own bit background, enriching each note.

As I listened to DO IT, I could almost feel a blue current running along the floor beneath my feet. While I've not seen them in person, other reviewers speak highly of how fun their shows are. Every track calls you to the dance floor. So roll back the rug, toss down a bit of sawdust and have a blast. I promise, you won't leave the floor until the last note has faded.

I'm tipping my hat ....

The album releases June 16th. I'll post the social media links below and the album should be up for purchase then on the following locations:

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Lazarus Nichols

ROCK N ROLL HEART
This blog is called KellysCountry for a reason. I listen to, promote and review classic country, bluegrass, Americana, Folk and fridges of any of those compilations. I do not review rock.... not even country rock/ country pop or whatever they're calling music on the radio these days.

So when I received this CD in the mail, the cover through me. Adam Dawson at Broken Jukebox  knows my preferences so I had to scratch my head when he sent this CD my Lazarus Nichols to me.  But I'm if nothing else, a good sport. If Adam thought this was in my wheelhouse, I'd give it a listen.

Rock N Roll Heart is the epitome of  "don't judge a book by it's cover" or in this case, a CD.

I've long been a fan of Neil Young and my mind went to my younger days of sitting in a dark corner of a room while my first husband and his buddies toked and listened to The Band and Neil Young. The lyrics were profound while the music wrapped you in a mellow cocoon.

Gonna Be Okay opens the cd with a jazzy horn fitting of any New Orleans bar crawl. I'd love to see him play this on NCIS-New Orleans. I think Laz and Scott Bakula would get along just fine.
Things slow down a bit, but the beat is still prevalent in Small Axe.
The traditional finger-pick style on Come Again In Glory draws you on a journey traveled with the ever-faithful spirit.
Loathsome Shadow bears down hard on the raw Americana sound with the guitar licks and that Neil Young grit to his voice.
A take on Murphy's Law, Shit and Shame hearkens to real, everyday life when you just want to smack something.
Diggin A Hole is a story Lazarus seems to pull from deep inside, almost painfully, to tell the tale and showcases an almost primitive connection to his rock and roll influences.
Makin Good Time is a toe-tapper that seems to tell the untold story of the hard road knocks of an artist.
Rise is probably the most prophetic of all the songs on this CD... the call Lazarus heard to seriously begin his musical journey that carried him from Ohio to Texas. Personally, I'm glad he listened... and I think you will to.

I'm posting the title cut below for you to draw your own conclusions about this new 'old soul' taking Austin by storm.

I'm tipping my hat:

OUT OF THE CHUTE - Profile

There's that moment when you are not sure you want to listen, but something compels you to do so anyway. Whether it be a small but firm voice telling you "it's time" or "listen to me", you can't turn away.

And so it was when Adam Dawson of Broken Jukebox Media pointed me in the direction of Lazarus Nichols. At first glance of the CD, I thought wires might have crossed somewhere. I don't review rock n roll. But I have to tell you, there is something a lot deeper to Lazarus Nichols. And I'm glad I took the time to listen to the voice.

Laz is one cool cat. Listening to his music you get a real sense of the pace at which he moves, his thoughtful process towards everything you approaches and the deeply spiritual soul buried within. The fact that the Austin music scene has embraced him like a long lost brother is no surprise.

A transplant from Ohio, Lazarus Nichols now calls Austin home, along with his wife, two kids, three dogs and two cats. I first heard his name when I reviewed Libby Koch's CD - Just Move On. Libby Koch knows talent when she hears it and only works with the best people on her projects. Lazarus Nichols fits the profile to a T.

With that behind him, Lazarus set out to put his virgin album together. With a stack of his own songs and determination, he teamed up with singer, songwriter and producer, Kris Brown for Rock n Roll Heart. An eclectic cd I'll be reviewing tomorrow on Turntable Tuesday.

Until then, kick dim the lights, kick back in your favorite chair and mellow out to this tune:

Catch you tomorrow for Turntable Tuesday when I review Rock n Roll Heart

Country Blessings!
Kelly
