FEELS LIKE TEXAS sets the tone for this honky tonk themed album. All thirteen tracks belong on a jukebox. That jukebox usually sat in the corner of a friendly neighborhood bar where the bartender got paid for listening more than the drinks he poured. JOE KNOWS is a throwback to that time when crying in your suds to the bartender was a common occurrence. Those small – town bars are few and far between but not forgotten.

Nothing beats a good Texas swing with a partner on the dance floor. ALL OVER ME is a Bob Wills style tune that keeps with the honky tonk theme and flows smooth as a boot scoot into I FEEL AT HOME IN A HONKY TONK.  

COWBOY BOOTS AND TELECASTERS is more of a cry for what is lost. The image of George Jetson on his skywalk getting nowhere comes to mind. What we crave is always just out of our reach while we trudge through the daily grind in hopes of affording that 'permanent vacation'.

DIDN’T WE HAVE US A BALL is a waltz for the ages.  Often times when I hear a song, my mind forms a video image of the song. This would be perfect as a video with sepia-toned shots of all his escapades mixed with black and white of grandpa and his grandson sitting in a rocker on the front porch… the young child rapt with attention at all the things his grandpa did as a youngster. This is a song to treasure for I fear those times will fade into black. IF I CAN’T GET OVER YOU slows us down in the perfect Texas waltz of sadness and strength.

No album would be complete without a little attitude and Gary does not pull any punches on MY WAY IS THE HIGHWAY. He gets his point across tactfully while not losing sight of the album concept.

DREAMER carries a bit of 1970s back sound lost on much of today’s so-called country music.. A fact Gary brings to the foreground like a large billboard in WHERE’S THE COUNTRY IN OUR COUNTRY MUSIC.  

Regardless of what we do, nothing seems to be enough for the other person in our life. The lament for those times and Gary’s ability to teach us is prevalent in COULDN’T DO NOTHIN’ RIGHT. On the next track, he flips the coin on ONE WAY OR ANOTHER  showing us that determination is everything. Bobby Flores’ mandolin prowess is showcased beautifully on this track.

In WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON, Gary draws the line, begging a decision so that both parties may get on with their life with some direction.

While I've had the pleasure of getting to know Gary through emails over the past couple of years, I had not really listened to his music. I knew more about the man behind the music, than the actual songs. I found a fine blend in this album. Gary is Texas music and Texas music is Gary P. Nunn. 

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER is a ‘Mayberry’ album. Every track takes us back to a simpler time where good music and old fashioned values prevailed. As producer, Gary had his fingers on the pulse, insuring every cut cameacross exactly how he wanted them to, keeping the true spirit of Texas music alive for us to enjoy.

OUT OF THE CHUTE - Silver Line - Chuck Hawthorne

This Out of the Chute is different from the usual in that this is not an interview (though there will be one in the coming weeks). Out of the Chute takes on a different tone this week as Chuck Hawthorne sets to release his first CD - Silver Line - tomorrow. So let's open the gate and give a listen...

Like the train that has run from Durango to Silverton CO since 1879, Chuck Hawthorne’s voice carries a classic tone reminiscent of Woody Guthrie. A true story-teller painting picture after picture.

The title track sets the wheels in motion for a great album as the Silver Line moves down the tracks. From Welding Son of a Gun through Rough Luck, Chuck shows us the good times and the moments of sadness we all experience on our path through life. The times of rejoice balance the periods of sadness making up the Americana quilt that covers us, their threads interwoven to form a warm hug of love and memories to be cherished. 

A couple of the tunes are unique, set apart by the musical arrangement. Bound To Be Bound carries the heartbeat rhythm of a vision quest while keeping pace with the steady turn of train wheels along the track. As I listened to Dragon Flies, I could picture this song as part of a soundtrack for a fantasy movie, something similar to Erogon. 

While the dark soulful strains of Enemy will have you traversing dark hallways of your past, Ovando lightens the mood. Like the Montana namesake, Ovando - co-written with Shawn T. Pabst, is a beautiful waltz lamenting to the blending of past and present. 

The prayerful notes of Ashes & Embers would flow beautifully into Post 2 Gate were it not for the mastery of songwriter/ producer Ray Bonneville. The two tracks are separated by The Gospel Hammer, a song with strong Americana roots that keep the over-all tone of this album from becoming heavy. 

Every album needs a song about a woman and Chuck wrote the perfect one in Leaving Amarillo. The harmony vocals of Eliza Gilkyson  are the perfect little extra something to let this song stand out from the rest. Rough Luck, penned by the legendary Ray Bonneville, is the only tune on Silver Line Chuck did not write (or co-wrote as is the case with Ovando). A chance meeting with Ray Bonneville in an airport put Chuck on the track that helped make this album possible... a journey that is filled with anything but 'rough' luck. 

These are just a drop in the bucket to the songs and stories Chuck Hawthorne has to tell as he takes us on an acoustical journey through time filled with love, pain and rebirth. From Texas to Iraq and points in between, Silver Line offers earthy lyrics and a rhythm rich in heritage. . I can't wait to hear where he takes us next. I am tipping my hat

TURNTABLE TUESDAY - Forever Changed - T. Graham Brown

I was honored to have this CD appear in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago. While I've always enjoyed T. Graham Brown's country music, I was excited to hear about this Gospel album... his first studio album in over ten years.  From the opening track through to the last, I enjoyed every one. While the core is Gospel, there is more soul in this album... true Southern Gospel soul.

T. Graham Brown is the honest, open-hearted person we all look for in a friend. In “HE'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU". T, along with friend Vince Gill give sound advice to anyone thinking there is no hope left.

Like looking for a light at the end of a dark tunnel, “MIDNIGHT RAINBOW" is a song of hope and promise. Southern Gospel trio, Three Bridges help shine that light.

WHICH WAY TO PRAY is more than just a song... it's a delima we all face. Do we pray for our own survival, or for the other person. We are always given a blessing when someone brings awareness to something as unsettling as child abuse and the lasting, invisible scars. T. Graham Brown teamed up with Sonya Isaacs on this heart-wrenching journey and the challenge of what we should ask the Lord for in any situation. I was also not surprised to find this song was co-written with Bill Anderson and Gary Nicholson.

The Oak RidgeBoys return on this track, asking the question “HOW DO YOU KNOW". T. Graham Brown digs deep for the response, offering up the power of truth and love.

WINE INTO WATER is a plea for redemption and the peace to be found there. Gospel artist, Jimmy Fortune is the perfect pairing of this tune as the friend to turn to when you need someone you know you can count on.

FOREVER CHANGED is drenched in a soulful cleansing worthy of this year's Grammy nomination for Best Roots Gospel Album. You only have to listen to any track on this CD one time to know this is so much more than a Gospel album.

I know I seem to give out stars with abandon but only because I am blessed to be given the cream of what is coming out of studios today. Forever Changed is no exception. Whether you like Gospel, Soul, or a gentle mix of both, I think you will enjoy FOREVER CHANGED.
