TURNTABLE TUESDAY - If Stars Could Sing - john Arthur martinez

Whenever I listen to a CD for review, one of the first things I look for is a theme; something that ties each song together in some way. The tempo may flow like a stream over hills and through valleys but the nuance of what the artist wants to convey is always there. And then there is the way john Arthur martinez does things. While the theme may not be obvious, I promise you the tie that binds is there. jAm brings something to the table for everyone. Regardless of whether you like a little Americana, peppered with a bit of Tex-Mex or more the classic rocker, john Arthur martinez serves up something for everyone. IF STARS COULD SING offers a full buffet.

From ‘Let’s All Go to Mexico’ (which he credits the late Kent Finlay for helping him write) to Ink Is Always Blue and everything in between, each track keeps you wondering what comes next – and you will not be disappointed. If you are a romantic at heart, you’ll love 'When the Heart Takes Control', 'Cardigan Sweater' (co-written with Mike Blakely) or the classic Mike Blakely tune, 'Kiss and Make Up for Lost Time' (from Mike’s ‘In the Dust’ CD). But it is the title track that will tug at your heart strings…. the words and melody paired to evoke an emotion u are not even aware of until you feel the punch.

'Jivin’ Gear Jammer' and 'Karma' have a bit of 1950’s ‘hand jive’ kind of vibe that just makes you want to dance. But for classic rockers, you will be mesmerized by the uncut version of 'Hotel California' and the amazing talent of Kurt Baumer on fiddle. The lead-in brings a reverence to this Eagles classic. In a smart twist, aside from the full track, jAm also provides a radio cut – opening up the possibilities for a new generation to grasp what Don Henley envisioned what seems like a lifetime ago.

jAm's musical influences are apparent throughout the album both in covers such as 'Down on the Corner' and 'Too Old To Die Young' as well as 'Longnecks and Heartaches' and 'Little Nashville', which he wrote.

IF STARS COULD SING is the track mix you would put together of all your favorites professionally mastered in not one but four different studios, providing special treatment each track warrants. If you like variety in your music, you will love IF STARS COULD SING.

I am tipping my hat ....

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR nominees

Okay... so somewhere along the line I missed a day this week. LOL So today I'm shining the spotlight on the last two nominees for Texas Music Awards Entertainer of the Year.

john Arthur martinez- jAm to his friends - is one of the most easy going/ hard working/ down to earth people I've come across in this business so far. Then we add he is humble and diplomatic and a family man. Is it any wonder he is in this category alone for the FOURTH time, first winning the award back in 2006.

jAm has been on the nominees list for various awards nine times counting his three nominations this year. A quick recap, those three would be: Song of the Year for Tennessee Left Texas, Popular Cover Award (for his rendition of the Merle Haggard classic, Sing Me Back Home) and Entertainer of the Year.

I send Good Luck and Country Blessings!

Pauline Reese is one of my favorite ladies in Texas Music today. Why? Because this woman personifies the 'I Can Do It All' attitude. She is a doting mother, a country wife, a talented singer, songwriter, performer. Geez. The woman can cook, garden, take care of the critters and love on her babies... all while fresh lyrics run through her head. When we chat on twitter, I can hear the 'happy' in her voice. I can't wait for the day when we actually get to sit and talk.

In the mean time, let's talk about her music accomplishments as they relate to the Texas Music Awards. Since her debut on the Awards list in 2006 when she debuted as a nominee for Record of the Year with Cowboy Way - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Pauline has been nominated NINE times. PLUS in two different years (with 2 separate producers - John Burris and Justin Pollard) her albums resulted in Producer of the Year nominations for John and Justin respectively. John for 'TOO TEXAS -Live at Cherry Ridge" and Justin in 2012 for "Just Getting Started".

With all those nominations, she has three wins to her credit... including the honor of being the first FEMALE Entertainer of the Year - (2010)  Tomorrow, Pauline Reese will serve as Grand Marshall in the Texas Music Awards parade through Linden.

I send Good Luck and Country Blessing!

Linden TX is going to be one happening town tomorrow. Wish I could be there. Will you? Please stop and leave comments for any of our artists. I should have the complete Winners List posted Sunday morning.

Congratulations to all the nominees and Good Luck at the Music Barn and the Texas Music Awards!
Country Blessings - Kelly

YOU PLAY MY HEART - Review

YOU PLAY MY HEART is the tenth album in a series of masterful creativity by John Arthur Martinez. Like any series, this compilation shows how his artistry has grown over time. The thirteen-track CD is full of pride, pasion and compassion.

The album opens up with a powerful story of love and devotion in You Don’t Mean To Hurt Me (with Pauline Reese) and carries the passion throughout the album. With the first notes in Cajita de Milangros you know jAm has reached back to his roots. From the haunting background of Emmylou’s Guitar to the story of strength in Dare To Dream Out Loud, jAm takes you on a tour of what’s inside of this quiet yet passionate man.

He’s added a touch of love and heartache in I Know How To Fall and Tennessee Left Texas and revisits a classic Merle Haggard tune in Sing Me Back Home. Any artist worth his salt knows you can’t go it alone in this business. The respect he’s garnered shines in the co-writing with Wake Eastman, Mike Blakely and Jan Landry (Apache Songs) to name just a few who've lent their talent to the lyrics. The amazing musicians and back vocals, all talented artists in their own right, are too numerous to mention. Grab a copy of the CD and you’ll see what I mean. And it’s all been pulled together for our listening pleasure with the help of Casey Hubble, Kurt Baumer, David Helms and Stefano Bertolotti.  This collection comes from his heart and he wants to touch yours.

This Country Angel gives the album 5 HATS

You can purchase your copy (and any of his other CDs)  by clicking HERE. It will soon be available at My Texas Music

OUT OF THE CHUTE - John Arthur Martinez!

You know the saying 'anywhere a truck driver eats, you know the food has got to be good'? Well, that's how I felt about John Arthur Martinez when I first heard about him. He's a good friend and has done projects with my friend Mike Blakely. Anyone Mike associates with just has to be good, in my opinion. Mike only works with the best. With that in mind, I knew I had to get to know more about jAm. Yep, that's how he writes it and what his friends call him. It's a nod to his writing-major past... after the poet, e.e. cummings.

Born in Austin, TX, John Arthur Martinez grew up listening to his relatives harmonize on mariachi ballads.
Trying to head in a more traditional direction, he graduated from Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in English and broadcast journalism (and minors in speech and philosophy) and then entered  graduate  school  at  the  University  of  Arizona  in  Tucson. But he couldn't stay away from music and continued to hone his song craft in college town coffeehouses. From there it's pretty much been a steady climb. He has nine albums including a live album and has appeared on two Christmas albums. His tenth album - 'You Play My Heart' was released on Saturday (I'll have a review tomorrow). jAm lives in Marble Falls TX with his family.

Let's pull the gate for John Arthur Martinez!

I’m going to step back in time for a moment with this interview and apprise some of you of something you did not know. jAm was a contestant on the first season of Nashville Star, coming a close second to winner, Buddy Jewel and ahead of one of today’s hottest female vocalists, Miranda Lambert. Great company to be in.

You had already released thre albums, ‘Spinning Our Wheels’ and ‘Stand Your Ground’ and On the Border (with many former Asleep at the Wheel veterans). Why did you make the decision to do Nashville Star? And what’s the most important thing you learned about yourself from the experience? I really didn't want to enter what I first thought was a frivolous contest, but after pressure from a local fan, a call from the talent buyer Hill's Cafe, the host venue for the local competition, and encouragement from my wife, Yvonna, I took the leap of Faith.

Do you remember what your first career decision was after coming out of Nashville Star (2003) and did the show have any impact on what has brought you to this point? My first decision was to sign with Stuart Dill of Refugee Management, who handled Jo Dee Messina at the time, and while Stuart is really a great guy and a nice person, for business purposes he chose to hand me off to a new partner in his firm named Norbert Nix, who wasn't in a financial position to devote to my career at that time. They bailed on me just as my new album was being released by Dualtone Records and distributed by Sony. In hind sight that may not have been the wisest choice because Stuart Dill had steered me toward The William Morse Agency, even though they weren't passionate about booking me like another agency had shown. But this all said, the limelight from Nashville Star has led to an international fan base that is still with me; many of these fans book me for private house concerts all over the map.

Your solid in your Texas roots and it shows in your music. What is it about Texas music that makes it so special? Texas brings many influences to the mix. Six flags flew over the Lone Star state and the mix of the German settlers, the Mexican culture, the Austin scene, the singer-songwriter culture, and more work together to create many unique artists like Willie, like Lyle, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Holly, ZZ Top, George Strait, Janice Joplin etc.

Your journey has a long list of great influences. Who do you think are some of the current artists that will continue to influence future performers? That's a hard one as I'm influenced by many, but I'd have to say that I'm most influenced by the serious singer-songwriters like Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Walt Wilkins, Rodney Crowell and others like them.

You’ve recorded with some great people in Texas music, been awarded Record of the Year in 2005 and 2010 as well as Entertainer of the Year in 2006 with the Texas Music Awards and other nominations. You are highly respected in the Texas music industry. Those are all great reasons to walk a little high in your boots. What keeps John Arthur Martinez grounded? My Faith, my wife, my love of small town life.

You parallel your varied music styles to a menu – ‘It all comes out of the same kitchen’. Is there anything new on ‘You Play My Heart’ we might not have seen on the menu before? There are two tracks entirely in Spanish, something I didn't do on Purgatory Road or Lone Starry Night. Plus it includes only the players from Central Texas and the Texas Hill Country. Furthermore, I had a hand in most of the mixing and engineering, all of which give this album more of an organic feel.

You had your first poem published at the age of 9, you have a Bachelors in English and you continue to write – reinforcing the singer-songwriter are the best match with oneself as an artist. Does a song come all at once or do you have to work at it over a period of time? Can you give us examples of your songs that hit either of those marks? Usually it's a simultaneous process but sometimes the lyrics come first and on occasion the melody first. On this song "You Play My Heart" that I co-wrote with Jan Landry, the melody and the lyrics came together quickly. On "Emmylou's Guitar" it evolved over time, but again the lyrics and the melody were written simultaneously.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received you would pass on to other artists?
My mentor Kent Finlay, from the San Marcos, TX area told me to write about what you know!

I want to thank jAm for taking the time out of a very busy schedule to do this for us. Tomorrow, I'll have a review of the brand new CD - You Play My Heart. I hope you'll come back.

You can find all of jAm's former albums currently on his page at My Texas Music To pick up his new CD, check out his website... www.johnarthurmartinez.net
